[box type="shadow"] Recommendation:
Tonight’s Altdot Comedy Lounge is showcasing comedians headed to this year’s Just for Laughs Festival! Considering Montreal’s celebrating 30 years of JFL, comedians are working to bring their A-game. That’s why Morgan Flood, the show’s producer, has been swarmed with requests from Toronto’s top comics seeking stage time to fine tune their performances. Last week, Comedy Uncovered was lucky enough to catch the Altdot show (an equally stellar show-see the lineup yourself). We saw Sean Cullen, a consummate international entertainer (starring in his own CBC Series The Sean Cullen Show, Last Comic Standing, Leno’s The Tonight Show, CBS’ The Late Late Show, The Ellen Show) absolutely, utterly annihilate. Performing for a full house, his bit about a Southern attorney had the entire audience in stitches. Dave Merheje’s (Just for Laughs, MTV Live) performance is a glorious hybrid of neurosis and shameless honesty. He’s one of those guys who can’t help but be original; glimpsing into his life through a lens best described as ‘uptight hipster,’ his rants illuminate the fact he was born to empty his soul onstage.[/box]

[box type="shadow"] Recommendation:
Two amazing showcases of Toronto comedians tonight – Diana Love’s Show at the Kitch and John Hastings Farewell at the Rivoli!
Diana Love’s fundraising show is dedicated to her newest project, a webseries, called Dumping Dwayne (keep an eye out, it’s going to be good!). The project’s promise is reflected by Diana’s own comedic ability (opened for workd-class comics like Jamie Kilstein, Maria Bamford and Bruce Vilanch, Video on Trial, Comedy Now!) and by her knowledge pertaining to throwing a killer live show! For example, you’ll get to witness the dryness of Barry Taylor worth his weight in platinum (which is, by the way, likely how successful Comedy Records is going to be). We’ll see you there right?
Goodbye John Hastings is the last show John is throwing this side of the Atlantic. With heavy hitters like Matt O’Brien (Comedy Now), Dylan Gott (fresh from his FRINGE one-man show Dylan Gott: Medicine Woman), and Graham Kay (Dave Chappelle commented on Graham’s set with “I hung out with Chris Rock at Eddie Murphy’s house and it takes me a lot to laugh that hard.”) C’mon, that’s an epic show![/box]

[box type="shadow"] Recommendation:
TOP SKETCH CANADA looks to showcase the best combination sketch/improv performers in Toronto’s scene. Tell us you’ve seen Laura Bailey (producer of her own successful monthly show, “Chick-a-Boom” at the Free Times cafe). Well… surely you’ve seen Canadian Comedy Award winning Jan Caruana? (About an Hour (Best of Fringe), the critically acclaimed Sass and the City, CCA’s Show Stopping Number) who recently appeared with Rob Baker in “That Moment When.” The comedic skill of Joel Buxton, both an industry-respected stand up and writer (Sunday Night Live’s The Sketchersons anyone?), will likely cause you to friend him on Facebook, or at least ‘Like’ his stuff (although, don’t tell him we said that – here’s him telling us everything wrong with Facebook ‘Likes). The show’s got a lot of promise, so go check it out! Then thank Jen Littlewood for a night of epic entertainment. [/box]

[box type="shadow"] Recommendation:
Tonight’s best show will be Laugh Sabbath at the Comedy Bar! It’s line up is almost t0o big: Bob Kerr, podcasting guru behind Hold Your Applause and writer for This Hour has 22 Minutes, and Chris Locke, a hilarious long-time Laugh Sabbath veteran, are both sure to make you laugh. BONUS: You’ll also get to see Levi Macdougal. Comedy Uncovered first saw Levi back in 2002 at the Rivoli, and although we weren’t the first to say it, Levi was (and remains) ridiculously talented. A founding member of Laugh Sabbath, Levi’s a talented actor and comedian (Just For Laughs, Important things with Demetri Martin, The Jon Dore Television Show). Heck, you’ve probably seen Levi as the the awkward hopeless ‘other-guy’ cellphone user on national ROGERS commercials. In a nutshell, Levi is good. We know it. The industry knows it. And if you head over to the comedy bar tonight, you’ll know it too! Check out their latest commercial. [/box]

These performers will exceed your expectations, likely because you didn’t even know something this good existed! An improvised off-the-cuff stand up set by some of the masters of the craft (although, these credits can’t quite do them justice): Dave Merheje (@DaveMerjehe, Just For Laughs, MTV LIVE, Video On Trial, We Ain’t Terrorists, The Debaters) Ron Sparks (@RonSparksJr, Just For Laughs, Comedy Now, Video On Trial, The Jon Dore Show, The Minnesota Wrecking Crew, Ed the Sock, The Debaters), Evan Desmarais (@evndsmrs, FunnyFest, Opened for Chris Hardwick and Jim Jefferies), Sean Green (@greenroomshow, National Lampoon Radio, Comedy Nation, and Spike) Levi MacDougall (@LeviMacDougall, see Monday’s Review!), Steve Patterson (@patterballs, Just for Laughs, The Debaters, Comedy Now, Halifax Comedy Festival, Winnipeg comedy festival), James Adomian (@JAdomian, Last Comic Standing, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Comedy Bang Bang, Mad TV, Mind of Mencia, Jimmy Kimmell Live). This show is PACKED full of amazing entertainers. Count us in!
Why not stick around and check out the Superstars of Comedy at the Comedy Bar? This show has been a hit in the past with both new-to-the-scene and seasoned comedy fans. We recently saw Debra perform for Comic Vision at Steamwhistle Brewery, and witnessed her relentless style win over a rowdy comedy-green audience. Other noteworthy acts on the bill are Alex Pavone (Yuk Yuk’s, MTV’s Cocktales), Pat MacDonald(Absolute Comedy, MTV), Ryan Horwood (Yuk Yuk’s and producer of the Saturday night Crown and Dragon). This is going to be a great show!

[box type="shadow"] Recommendation:
Tonight’s a double-header! Go catch the closest show:
“I’m in Mississauga! Save me from East Side Mario’s and Sugar Daddy’s” You should head over to the premiere show at the Lionheart Pub. If you haven’t yet seen Mark Debonis, you haven’t yet witnessed one of the greatest acts coming out of Toronto in the past two years. He won the Yuk Yuk’s Great Canadian Laugh Off (and $25,000!), founded of the uber-successful Twitter Gong Show, and is currently mad-profiting from his “BadFellas Comedy Tour.” Mad profiting may be an exaggeration, but regardless, the show’s gaining considerable steam. Plus you get to see Monty Scott and Alex Pavone (two of our favorites). This show practically sells itself!
“I’m downtown, it’s hot, and Rob Ford is Mayor. Give me release!” We’ve got a sore spot for the Second City Mainstage Revue. Second City seems to excel at two conflicting aspects: they run an incredible tight show on relatively loose premises. Watching these pros interact with each other and the audience leaves us in awe at their sheer comedic timing and wit. Plus, the venue is incredibly spacious, comfortable and professional; what’s not to enjoy?
