Question: Why pay $99 dollars to see one JFL comic when you can go to the AltDot  Comedy Lounge to see5!? Honestly, there’s no other show this week (besides the untouchable Louis C.K.) which packs as much comedic talent as this one. We’ll prove it.

Sean Cullen - Just For Laughs Alumnus –  Sean is an all-around consummate international entertainer (starring in his own CBC Series The Sean Cullen Show, Last Comic Standing, Leno’s The Tonight Show, CBS’ The Late Late Show, The Ellen Show). The last time we saw him at the Rivoli he was performing a Southern Attorney bit to a full-house…and he absolutely annihilated.

Dave Merheje - Just for Laughs Alumnus – Dave (Just for Laughs, MTV Live) delivers a glorious performance comprised of both neurosis and shameless honesty. He’s one of those guys who can’t help but be original; glimpsing into his life through a lens best described as ‘uptight hipster,’ his rants illuminate the fact he was born to empty his soul onstage.

Debra DiGiovanni – Just For Laughs Alumnus – Debra is currently touring with Jim Breuer and Tom Papa! Besides being a regular on TV’s Video On Trial, this Canadian Comedy Award Winner (best female comic for the third time in 5 years) has been called the “Best Comedian to see after a Messy Break Up.” We recently saw Debra perform for Comic Vision at Steamwhistle Brewery, and witnessed her relentless style win over a rowdy crowd. With Debra’s energetic persona and relatable yet personal material,  it’s easy to see why she’s so damn lovable

Mark Forward - Just for Laughs Alumnus – Mark’s success spans both TV and the stage. He’s currently on Mr. D, he’s written and performed on The Jon Dore Television Show, and just he made his Late Night TV debut on Late Night with Craig Ferguson. He’s one of the best comedians in the country, so count your lucky stars he’s hosting tonight’s show!

Pete Zedlacher - Just For Laughs Alumnus -  Pete’s JFL performed with the Muppets at this year’s Just for Laughs 30th! In the 13 years that Pete’s been doing comedy, he’s performed everywhere from Afghanistan to the North Pole. He’s practically covered every aspect of the industry; TV, movies, festivals and radio (and recently for Comic Vision at Steamwhistle Brewery!). Originally a theatre actor, Pete’s transition into stand up brought with it a knack for injecting impressions, characters and physical humour into his set.

See? Why watch one JFL Comic when you can see 5!? The Rivoli knows how to throws the best show of the week![/box]

Andy Kindler, originally from New York, has a reputation for annoying people all over the world. Kindler is a frequent guest and correspondent for “The Late Show With David Letterman,” and the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. His other noteworthy credits include Comedy Central Presents, the HBO “Young Comedians Special,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist, “Home Movies” and “The Larry Sanders Show.” He is often recognized for playing the life affirming character, Andy, on the CBS sitcom, “Everybody Loves Raymond.” Each summer, Andy delivers the State of the Industry address to a packed ballroom filled with comics and Hollywood industry types in Montreal for Just for Laughs Festival. An established writer, Kindler’s also wrote “The Hack’s Handbook” for National Lampoon, a how-to guide satirizing and exposing tired comedy formulas.

In short, Andy’s smart and hilarious stand up performance shouldn’t be missed! [/box]

[box type="shadow"]  Recommendation:

Big Jay Oakerson didn’t take the traditional path into comedy. Of course, being a bouncer for stag party strippers and a dress-up Elmo for children’s birthday parties isn’t the traditional path into anything. Oakerson’s story-based style of stand-up comedy got its start after a series of dead-end jobs and now shares his stories of his old life like driving strippers and escorts around his hometown of Philly, odd threesomes and bizarre sexual encounters. Oakerson TV’s credentials include IFC’s “Z-Rock,”Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend, ” “Comedy Central Presents” and “Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn, ” among others. He’s recently performed stand-up as an opener for KORN on their latest tour (Stand up for metalheads sounds ridiculously difficult; you know he’s gotta be good!). Jay wowed for a fourth time at Montreal’s Just for Laughs Comedy Festival, performing on (and closing) the “Nasty Show.”His latest interview on Marc Maron’s WTF was both memorable and entertaining. Check it.

Don’t have a Just For Laughs Pass? See his Canadian equivalent Tim Nasiopolous at the Old Sods’ Comedy Records’ showcase! Like Big Jay Oakerson, Tim’s road to comedic success hasn’t been conventional either, but you’ll love him for it. If you mention back room poker games in Vietnamese bowling alleys or stories of stealing bottles of hypnotic from prom kids while driving a limousine and Tim will flash a mischievous grin.  After stints at a Sobey’s stocking shelves in Calgary or flirting with the idea of becoming a massive Greek male gigolo, Tim returned to the stage in a variety of dive bars in Eastern Alberta. This, of course, all lead to his return to Toronto where he now performs along with tours of Canada. Heck, he even played a large agent opposite Tim Allen and Courtney Cox in Zoom. All this can only come from a man who once sang Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On’ with a drug dealer named Silver and a homeless flower merchant on the streets of Lower Manhattan. So head to the Old Sod and have a drink with Tim. Ask him for a story…you know he’ll deliver![/box]

You’ve got your Louis C.K tickets in hand right? RIGHT?! Good, because Louis’ show tonight at the Sony Center is going to be a historical moment for Toronto. However, some of you may be curious as to why everyone thinks Louis C.K is such a big deal; frankly, it’s a valid question. After all, Louis is just one man telling jokes on stage, on TV infront (and behind) the camera. So to understand his deep-seated influence on the contemporary comedic landscape, you must first analyze the groups of people who praise him: Industry-types and the public en-mass.

i) The General Public see him broadcast on his own sitcom, Louie. The show’s popularity can be attributed to the relatable and blunt issues Louis addressed as a single, divorced father. The show uniquely communicates wrenching-honesty through comedy with realistic characters and situations. Everyone believes him, loves him and has grown in the hearts of the everyman as a hero and savior.

ii) People within the Industry see him as a pioneer leading the movement of “Do-It-Yourself” entertainment. Louis’ business model and production epitomizes “My Way or the Highway.” He released his own album independently online “Live at the Beacon” for just $5, which then went viral (legally). By removing the middleman (networks, labels, producers, an issue discussed by Marc Maron in his Just for Laughs Keynote Address) C.K wins back his creative and fiscal freedom to develop a product truly honest and personal. The rest of the community, standing in awe, soon realized that this would be the way of the future. He developed respect industry-wide for his steadfast approach to self-production.

So really, both the industry and public love Louis C.K for simply being the man of truth, unafraid to tell it (and live) like it is.[/box]

Oh my god! Whose Line Is It Anyways (WLIIA) is in Toronto during their Canadian Tour! Tonight, for one night only, you have the opportunity to recapture all the giddyness of your childhood with just one ticket purchase. Their improvised games and general tomfoolery packs the equivalent joy of the summer camp games of our youth (with Greg Proops being that super cool older kid we only wish we could be).

So which games will Greg, Ryan, Chip and Jeff play? Scenes for a hat? Hoedown? (But can you really ever a Hoedown without Wayne?) Party Quirks? Superheros? Helping Hands? Weird Newscasters? Regardless which ones they choose, the team’s intimate and revealing performance style is the type of fun we’ve only ever seen on TV; just imagine the live show!

If you didn’t catch Whose Line Is It Anyways last night, go see the Bad Dog Theatre’s WLIIA influenced Hungry Hungry Games at the Comedy Bar, 8pm! Featuring a super talented cast of young improvisers, the show combines the classic improv comedy games of shows like Theatresports and Whose Line is It Anyways? with all the high-stakes bloodshed and teen angst of The Hunger Games. The result is a tight, theatrical comedy show with the outcome and fate of each player in the hands of the audience. In each show, host Connor Thompson (Second City Tour Co) guides five players through a series of side-splitting games and scenes.  Their only hope of survival?  Winning the audience’s favour as they’re slowly voted out and the competition heats up. [/box]

Oh, tonight’s recommendation is a toss up! Will you go see Kenny Robinson’s Nubian Show or Chick-a-boom?

Kenny Robinson, Host and Producer of the Nubian Disciples of Comedy, has grown this monthly show into the best urban rooms in the country. (Yes, you read that right. No, it’s not an exaggeration). In our interview with Arthur Simeon earlier this year, Arthur credits Kenny’s high energy and skill (both working with the crowd onstage and with performers offstage) to the night’s success. Kenny’s highly anticipated shows seemingly create a sweeping thirst for laughter throughout the crowd; step into the room during any of the performances to see just how pumped the audience becomes.

(In case you’re wondering, everyone’s welcome. Just ask Nathan Macintosh, a red-hair, fair-skinned crowd favorite.)

Chickaboom puts on a great show at the Freetimes Cafe. The vibe of this show is inviting and intimate, as if you’re sitting in entire room of new friends…because that’s exactly what you’re doing. Laura and Jess work hard to produce a night showcasing a variety of acts; monologues, dance, music, sketch, stand-up. Everything entertaining, everything Toronto, and everything women. (The ladies won us over after they gave us our first Ladystache experience. So who will you discover?)
